The Roll lists his address as Hall Lane, Werrington. It misrecords his regimental number as 43830; it was actually 43820. Whilst the Roll records him under his true legal name of Christopher Robert Prentice, as he enlisted in the Army as "Robert Prentice", all his military records are under that name.
(His birth was registered as Christopher Robert Prentice in 1896 in the Peterborough District. On the 1901 census "Christopher" aged 4 was living with his parents Caroline and Robert in Hall Lane Werrington, which was stated as his place of birth. On the 1911 census he was recorded as "Robert", aged 14, living with his parents in Werrington. He enlisted as "Robert Prentice". Soldiers Died in the Great War records that "Robert Prentice" was a native of Werrington who enlisted in Peterborough, and that he had formerly served in the Northamptonshire Regiment under regimental number 14020. The Medal Rolls record that Robert went to France on 25/7/1915, and that he had served in the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment under regimental number 14020 before joining the Bedfordshire Regiment, in which he was serving at the time he died. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that "Robert Prentice" died of wounds on 23/10/1918, and that his mother Caroline was his legatee. CWGC records that Private R Prentice, regimental number 43820, died on 23/10/1918 serving in 1st Battalion Bedfordshire Regiment. He is now buried in grave D.1 at Amerval Communal Cemetery Extension in Solesmes, France, having been reinterred after the War).
