Notes
The Roll lists his address as 36 Belsize Avenue.
(CWGC records that Private Joseph Charles Papworth, regimental number 295268, died aged 28 on 22/3/1918 serving in 2nd/4th Battalion of the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), and is commemorated on Pozieres Memorial in France. They record him as the son of Joseph and Mary Ann Papworth of 22 Mill Street, Oakham, Rutland. Joseph Charles Papworth's birth was registered in Huntingdon District in 1890. On the 1891 census he was living with his parents Joseph and Mary in Main Street, Alconbury Weston, which was given as his place of birth. On the 1901 census he was living with his parents at 77 Belsize Avenue in Woodston, Peterborough. On the 1911 census he was living with them at 86 Belsize Avenue, Woodston. Soldiers Died in the Great War inaccurately recorded Joseph's place of birth as Woodston, stating he was living in Peterborough when he enlisted in Fletton; it states he served in the Hunts Cyclist Battalion under regimental number 304 before transferring to the 4th Battalion Royal Fusiliers. The Medal Rolls record that Joseph served in France from 1/8/1917 to 17/8/1917 with the Hunts Cyclist Battalion under regimental number 290087, and that from 18/8/1917 he served in France with the 4th Battalion Royal Fusiliers under regimental number 295268. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that Joseph's death on 22/3/1918 was presumed, and that his mother Mary was his legatee).
