Notes
The Roll lists his address as 75 Tower Street, New Fletton. It records his date of death as 24/10/1918, which differs from official records.
(CWGC records that Private Edwin Marriott, regimental number 328177, died aged 21 on 25/10/1918 serving in 1st/1st Battalion Cambridgeshire Regiment, and is buried in the south-east part of Sameon Churchyard in France. They record him as a native of King's Lynn, the son of Edwin and Mary Marriott of 75 Tower Street, New Fletton, Peterborough. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects likewise record that Edwin died on 25/10/1918, indicating that he was killed "accidentally", and that his father was his legatee. The Medal Rolls record that Edwin's former regimental number in the Cambridgeshire Regiment was 6868. When his death was announced on 9/11/1918 in the Peterborough Advertiser, it was reported that Edwin had enlisted in 1914 and had been serving in France for three years. A letter from his Chaplain was quoted as stating that one of Edwin's friends had been cleaning a rifle prior to inspection when it went off accidentally, shooting Edwin in the neck. Edwin had died shortly after. The newspaper inaccurately reported his date of death as 24th October 1918, which doubtless gave rise to the error on the Peterborough Roll of Honour).
