(CWGC records that Private William Harold Jolley, regimental number 2270, died on 1/7/1916 serving in the 1st/3rd Battalion of the London Regiment (Royal Fusiliers), and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial in France. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was living in London when he enlisted at Edward Street. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects mistakenly recorded William Harold Jolley's original regimental number as 2278, indicating that it later changed to 250589; his mother Elizabeth was his legatee. His birth was registered in 1889 as "William Harald Jolley". On the 1891 census he was recorded as "William Harold Jolley", living with his parents James and Elizabeth in Exchange Street, Peterborough; he was still at home on the 1901 census. His parents were living at 9 Exchange Street on the 1911 census; William had by then left home. He was initially posted as wounded and missing from 1/7/1916, which was announced on 9/9/1916 in the Peterborough Advertiser. On 9/6/1917 the Peterborough Advertiser reported that he had been officially stated to have been killed "on or about that day". It was stated he had been working in Regents Street when he enlisted on the outbreak of War. He was reported to have served in Malta, Egypt and the Dardanelles, where he had been wounded on 14/10/1915. Following treatment in Warrington Hospital in England, he had rejoined his unit in France in April 1916. The Medal Rolls record that his original regimental number was 2270 (under which his 1914-15 Star medal was issued), but later changed to 250589 (under which his British and Victory medals were issued); he had embarked for France on 19/4/1916).
