Notes
The Roll lists no address for him. It stated that he died serving in the "Royal Suffolks", which differs from official records.
(CWGC has no record of the death of any "J Hurry" of the Suffolk Regiment. They do however record that Rifleman John William Hurry, regimental number 43561, died aged 19 on 29/8/1918 serving in the King's Royal Rifle Corps, attached to the 1st/16th Battalion London Regiment (Queen's Westminster Rifles), and is commemorated on Panel 9 of Vis en Artois Memorial in France. They record him as the son of John and Elizabeth Oliver of 34 Gracious Street, Whittlesey. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that the John William Hurry who died on 29/8/1918 was a native of Whittlesey who enlisted in Wisbech. His birth was registered in Whittlesey as "John William Hurry" in 1899; in 1900 his mother Elizabeth Hurry married John Oliver in Whittlesey. On the 1911 census he was recorded as "John Hurry Oliver", living with his mother Elizabeth Oliver and her husband John at 18 Claygate, Whittlesey. Although he had been recorded on that census under the surname "Oliver", he enlisted under his legal surname of Hurry. His surviving Army records and his entry on the registers of CWGC are therefore under that surname. On 12/10/1918 the Peterborough Advertiser reported that a memorial service had been held at St Mary's Church in Peterborough for "Private Jack Hurry", who had died on 29th August 1918; the newspaper mistakenly referred to him as being of "the Suffolks", rather than the King's Royal Rifle Corps, which doubtless gave rise to the error on the Roll of Honour).
