Notes
The Roll lists his address as 44 Cavendish Street.
(CWGC records that Private B W Hughes, regimental number 42545 died on 31/7/1917 serving in 12th Battalion Royal Fusiliers, and is now buried in grave II.J.45 at Perth Cemetery (China Wall) in Belgium, having been reinterred after the War. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects mistakenly recorded that Private Bertie William Hughes, regimental number G/42545, was killed in action on 31/7/1918, rather than 1917; his widow Edith Annie was his legatee. The Medal Rolls record that Bertie died on 31/7/1917, stating he had served overseas in the 2nd Battalion from 6/11/1916 to 25/11/1916, then in the 20th Battalion 26/11/1916 to 27/12/1916, then in the 2nd Battalion 14/6/1917 to 1/7/1917, and finally in the 12th Battalion from 2/7/1917 to his death on 31/7/1917. Bertie was omitted from Soldiers Died in the Great War. On 29/9/1917 the Peterborough Advertiser reported that he was listed as missing, stating him to be the son of Mr & Mrs J Hughes of Wellington Street and the husband of Mrs Hughes of 44 Cavendish Street. The 1911 census recorded Bertie as aged 18, living with his parents Mary Elizabeth & John Henry at 129 Wellington Street. His birth was actually registered in Peterborough in 1892 as "William Bertie Hughes", but he was recorded as Bertie William on all other documents; his marriage to Edith Jervis in 1916 was registered as "Bertie W Hughes").
