Notes
The Roll lists his address as 109 Palmerston Road. It wrongly recorded his regimental number as 5414.
(CWGC records that Lance Corporal G S Holmes, regimental number 5814, died on 9/3/1915 while serving in 1st Battalion Royal Fusiliers, and is buried in grave E.4 at La Chapelle D'Armentieres Communal Cemetery in France.
'Soldiers Died in the Great War' records that Private 'George Samuel Holmes', regimental number G/5814, was a native of Peterborough who enlisted in Hounslow, and that he died on 9/3/1915 serving in 1st Battalion London Regiment, i.e. the Royal Fusiliers. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record him as 'George Samuel Holmes' under regimental number 5814 (with the number 5414 crossed through), and that he died at Chapelle D'Armentieres on 9/3/1915; they record that his mother Hannah Holmes was his legatee.
At some point in the War, the Army mistakenly added an extra forename to their records of this soldier, whose birth was registered as Samuel Holmes in 1892, and whose own mother was quoted in local newspapers in 1915 as saying that he had only ever had one forename, Samuel, The Medal Rolls re his 1914 Star listed him as 'G. Holmes, 5814', but the Rolls re his British and Victory Medal listed him as 'George Samuel Holmes, GS 5814'. Clearly, the Army misinformed CWGC re his forenames, hence their listing of him as 'G.S. Holmes'.
