Notes
The Roll's inclusion of an entry re George Gardiner arose because of the inscription on the WW1 memorial at St John's Church, which lists "G. Gardiner" as a casualty. However, having confused the details of two Peterborough soldiers of similar names, the compiler of the Roll recorded the wrong address and service details.
The Roll wrongly lists the casualty's address as 50 Westwood Street, and states he died as Private 36712 in the Royal Engineers. (In fact, the George Martin Gardner of that address and service number survived the war, having served in the East Kents and Royal Engineers). The George who actually died was of 308 Walpole Street, and served in the Northants Regiment under the surname "Gardner".
(CWGC records that Private George Gardner, regimental number 3/9695, died aged 22 on 4/3/1917 serving in the 2nd Battalion Northants Regiment, and is commemorated on Thiepval Memorial; they record him as the son of George Gardner of 308 Walpole Street, Peterborough. George's birth was registered in Peterborough in 1895 as "Gardener"; he was baptised at St Mark's Church on 20/10/1895 as the son of George and Eliza Jane Gardener of 17 Gladstone Street. The family itself appears to have used the spelling "Gardner"; on the 1911 census George 'Gardner' was living with his sister and their widowed father at 628 Gladstone Street. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that George Gardner, regimental number 3/9695, had been born in St Mark's parish in Peterborough, and had enlisted in the 2nd Battalion Northants Regiment. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that George's sister Ethel was his legatee).
