Notes
The Roll lists his address as 36 Lincoln Road East, and correctly states he died on 23/8/1918. It wrongly recorded him as Bombardier "Albert E Elliott" of the Royal Garrison Artillery, and that he had been killed in action; in fact, he was actually Private Albert Elliott, who died of wounds serving in the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment.
(CWGC records that Private Albert Elliott, regimental number 30967, was serving in the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment when he died aged 26 on 23/8/1918, and is buried in grave V.A.20 of Daours Communal Cemetery Extension in France. Their registers record him as the son of Robert James and Louisa Elizabeth Elliott of 36 Lincoln Road East, Peterborough, i.e. verifying him to be the casualty listed on the Peterborough Roll of Honour. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that the Private Albert Elliott 30967 who died on 23/8/1918 serving in the 6th Battalion Northants Regiment was a native of Peterborough, and that he had died of wounds. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects likewise record that he died of wounds, and state that his parents Robert & Louisa were his legatees. The Medal Rolls similarly record that Albert Elliott died of wounds, and indicate that he had only ever served in the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment. The Birth Index records that his birth was registered in Peterborough in 1892 as "Albert Elliott", with no 2nd initial; he appeared as such on the 1901 & 1911 census.
The errors on the Peterborough Roll of Honour re Albert's Regiment etc most probably arose because a Gunner Albert Edward Elliott, 94586, of the Royal Horse Artillery died on 24/8/1918. That man was of Lower Tooting, London, but the appearance of his name on the Army's casualty lists for August 1918 may have led to him being mistaken for the Albert Elliott who had lived in Peterborough).
