Notes
The Roll lists his address as 102 New Road, Woodston. It records his forename as "Charles", and that he died serving in the Machine Gun Corps under regimental number 419211, both of which differ from official records.
(Soldiers Died in the Great War records that Ernest Charles Elger of Woodston died of wounds on 31/3/1918 while serving in the Labour Corps under regimental number 419211. It records that he had formerly served in the Machine Gun Corps under regimental number 43176. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that he died on 31/3/1918 serving in 926th Company of the Labour Corps under regimental number 419211, and that his father George was his legatee. CWGC record that Private E C Elger died aged 20 on 31/3/1918. They record him under the Machine Gun Corps, regimental number 43176, but indicate that he had transferred to the 926th Company of the Labour Corps under regimental number 419211; he is buried in grave VI.B.29 at Mendinghem Military Cemetery in Belgium. Their Headstone Schedules record his next of kin as Mrs Sarah Elger of 102 New Road, Woodston, Peterborough. The legal name of the man who died on 31/3/1918 was Ernest Charles Elger, and he appeared as such on most official records. As his death was reported in the Peterborough Advertiser on 20/4/1918 as "Private C. Elger", it appears he may have been known as "Charles", which would explain why he was listed as such on the Roll of Honour).
