Notes
The Roll lists his address as 42 Westwood Street. It states he died on 27/9/1918 as a Private in the Royal West Kents, but did not record his regimental number.
(CWGC records that Private J. Davies died on 27/9/1918 serving in the 1st Battalion of the Queen's Own (Royal West Kent Regiment), and is now buried in grave VIII.A.6 at Gouzeaucourt New British Cemetery in France, having been reinterred after the War. Their online database currently misrecords his regimental number as 26349; however, their original Graves Registration forms correctly record it as 28349. The WW1 Medal Rolls list Private Jack Davies of the West Kent Regiment under regimental number G/28349. That was likewise recorded as his regimental number in Soldiers Died in the Great War and in the Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects. It therefore appears that his true regimental number was G/28349. On 26/10/1918 the Peterborough Advertiser announced the death of Jack Davies, describing him as aged 20 and the adopted son of Mr George Eagle of Westwood Street, Peterborough; Jack was reported to have served in the Army for two and half years, and to have formerly worked at the White Lion Hotel. On the 1911 census Jack was recorded as aged 12, lodging with George Eagles at 21 Mayor's Walk in Peterborough. On the 1901 census he had been described as the 2 year old "nurse child" of George and Louisa Eagles at Alderman's Drive in Peterborough).
