Notes
The Roll lists his address as 136 Palmerston Road. It records his date of death as 23/3/1918, which differs from official records.
(CWGC records that Lance Corporal William George Culpin, regimental number 27719, died aged 27 on 22/3/1918 serving in the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, and is commemorated on Pozieres Memorial in France. They record him as the son of William & Annie Culpin of Palmerston Road, Woodston, Peterborough, and the husband of Drusilla Culpin of Benwick Lane, Doddington, March, Cambs. Soldiers Died in the Great War likewise records that William died on 22/3/1918, as do the Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects. On 27/4/1918 William Culpin's death was announced in the Peterborough Advertiser; it quoted from a letter his widow had received from Lieutenant B.S. Starbury, who had written that William had died "in the early hours of March 23rd". A letter from Lieutenant N.R. Hunting was also quoted, in which he informed William's widow that her husband had been buried "near the spot where he fell".
The account of events given in the letter from Lieutenant Starbury resulted in the Peterborough Roll of Honour recording William Culpin's date of death as 23rd March 1918. The Army, knowing only that William had died during the night of 22nd March, recorded that as his official date of death).
