Notes
The Roll merely records Mr Copplestone's surname, rank and Battalion, and that he was killed in action. N.B. This man was listed on the Roll twice: once in the main alphabetical- by-surname section (with the above sparse details), and again on the appendix page that is headed "The following list contains limited information concerning men thought to be from Peterborough who were killed in action, but for whom little can be discovered regarding addresses, regiments, dates of death etc" (on which page he is listed as "Copplestone, Corporal, 3rd Worcesters, killed in action"). As both entries relate to the same man, only one 'Names' record is needed for him.
(The only man of this surname officially recorded as having died in service with the Worcestershire Regiment was Lance Corporal Frank Copplestone, regimental number 5844. CWGC records that he died on 30/8/1915 in the 3rd Battalion, and is commemorated on Panel 34 of Ypres Menin Gate Memorial; they record him as the husband of Amelia H Copplestone of Feniton Court, Honiton, Devon. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that Frank Copplestone was a native of Aldershot who was living at Barnstaple in Devon when he enlisted in Aldershot. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his widow Amelia was his legatee. His Army file records that he had been aged 14 when he originally enlisted as a Boy on 1/5/1900; on 15/5/1908 he was appointed as a Private in the Military Foot Police; on 23/9/1911 he transferred to the Worcestershire Regiment in which he was re-engaged on 15/4/1912; he married Amelia Hartnel Parker on 2/7/1913 at Dowland Parish Church in Devon; he was appointed as unpaid Lance Corporal on 28/4/1914; he sustained a scalp wound on 6/4/1915, for which he was hospitalised, but rejoined his unit on 6/5/1915; he was appointed as Acting Corporal on 17/6/1915, and was killed on action 30/8/1915. Frank's Army file made no mention of an address in Peterborough, but did list several addresses for his wife, including Barrowby Grange, Grantham; the reason for his inclusion on the Peterborough Roll of Honour may therefore have been through her residence, not his).
