Notes
The Roll lists his address as Reform Street. It wrongly records his date of death as 20/5/1916.
(The birth of Albert Walter Cooke was registered in Peterborough District in 1888. On the 1901 census he was living with his parents Ann and Samuel Cooke at 57 Eastgate, Peterborough. On the 1911 census he was lodging at 10 Tower Street in New Fletton, Peterborough, working as a whip-maker. Albert's Army service file records his regimental number as 5205, and that he was aged 27 and living at 1 Reform Street in Peterborough when he enlisted on 11/12/1915. He was mobilized on 21/3/1916 and became a Private in the 3/8th Battalion of the Notts and Derby Regiment (Sherwood Foresters). Albert was still serving as a Private in the 3/8th Battalion of the Notts and Derby Regiment when he died two months later. His death certificate records that he died on 9/5/1916 from phthisis and tubercular meningitis at the Red Cross Hospital in Louth, Lincolnshire; the Matron registered his death. The Cemetery registers record that he was buried on 13/5/1916 at Fletton Cemetery, in Section 1, Grave 545. On 20/5/1916 Albert's funeral was reported in the Peterborough Advertiser: under the headline "Soldier's Funeral", the report stated that Private Albert Walter Cooke, son of Mrs Cooke of 1 Reform Street, had died at Louth Red Cross Hospital. The report mentioned that he had enlisted 9 weeks previously in the Sherwood Foresters. Despite the fact that Albert Cooke died as a serving soldier, CWGC was apparently never informed by the Army, and therefore currently have no record of him. His details have therefore been submitted to them, requesting that he be added to their Register).
