Notes
The Roll lists his address as Broadway, Peterborough, transposing his forenames as Percy Alphonse. It misrecords his rank as Corporal, and his unit as the Life Guards.
(CWGC records that Trooper Alphonse Percy Burch, regimental number 383, died on 12/10/1917 while serving in the Household Battalion, and is commemorated on Panel 3 of Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium. Soldiers Died in the Great War also records him as Trooper Alphonse Percy Burch, and indicates that he was formerly of the 2nd Battalion Life Guards, regimental number 3943. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that him as a Trooper in the Household Battalion, and that his widow Edith was his legatee. On the 1911 census Alphonse had been living at 106 Broadway with his parents William Harry & Mary Amelia Burch; he had married Edith Wright in 1914. The errors on the Roll of Honour re his rank and unit doubtless arose from a misleading report in the local press; when Alphonse's death was announced on 27/10/1917 in the Peterborough Advertiser, he was referred to as "Corporal Major P.A. Burch of the Life Guards, attached to the Household Brigade").
