Notes
The Roll lists his address as 44 St Margaret's Road in Peterborough.
(CWGC records that Private Horace Brown, 54164, died on 4/10/1918 aged 20 serving in 20th Battalion Manchester Regiment, and is commemorated on the Addenda Extension of Vis-en-Artois Memorial in France; they record him as the son of Walter and Beatrice Mary Brown, of Linton, Cambs. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his mother Beatrice was his legatee. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that he was a native and resident of Balsham near Cambridge who had enlisted in Peterborough. Horace's death certificate records that he was killed in action in France on 4/10/1918 serving in the 20th Battalion of the Manchester Regiment under regimental number 54164; it records his age as 22, but he was actually only 20 when he died, which suggests he may have lied about his age when he enlisted. His birth was registered in Linton District in Cambridgeshire in 1898. On the 1901 census he had been aged 2, living with his parents Beatrice and Walter Brown at Old House Road in Balsham, Cambridgeshire, which was given as his place of birth. On the 1911 census he had been aged 12, living with his parents at Horseheath Road in Linton).
