The pilot landed the plane near an advanced dressing station, from where John was taken by ambulance to hospital, via a clearing station. It was reported that John had originally joined the Honourable Artillery Company in February 1917. He received his commission at the end of that year. In civilian life, John had worked in the Chief Traffic Managers Department of the Great Northern Railway Company, and had been a member of the Peterborough Volunteer Fire Brigade.
