Notes
The Roll lists his address as 159 Westwood Street. It wrongly records that he died "2 August 1915, France".
(The 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment moved to Gallipoli in July 1915, landing at Suvla Bay on 7/8/1915. Initially reported as missing, Robert's death was officially presumed to have occurred on 9/8/1915. CWGC records that Lance Corporal Robert Benstead, regimental number 9949, died on 9/8/1915 serving in the 6th Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment, and is commemorated on Panel 44-46 of Helles Memorial in Turkey. Soldiers Died in the Great War records that Robert was killed in action at Gallipoli, stating that when he had enlisted at Grantham he had been living at Bourne in Lincolnshire, and had given his place of birth as Sawtry in Huntingdonshire. On the 1911 census he had been living at 159 Westwood Street, Peterborough with his parents, John and Eliza Minnie Benstead; his age at that time was recorded as 20. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that Robert was presumed to have been killed in action "on or since 9/8/1915", and that his widow Ethel J Benstead was his legatee. The Marriage Index records that Robert Benstead married Ethel J Blood in Peterborough District in 1915).
