Notes
The Roll lists his address as Bodger's Yard, Stanground. It misrecords him as 'Herbert E. Beeby'; his forenames are known to have been Herbert William.
(CWGC records that Sergeant H W Beeby, regimental number 8772, died on 14/4/1917 while serving in 9th Battalion Black Watch (Royal Highlanders); he is buried in grave II.E.17 at Aubigny Communal Cemetery Extension in France.
The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects records that the legatee of Herbert William Beeby was his mother Eleanor. On the 1901 census Herbert William Beeby was living with his parents Herbert & Eleanor in Farcet; by the 1911 census his parents were living in Bodger's Yard in Stanground. On 28/4/1917 Herbert's death from wounds was reported in the Peterborough Advertiser, which commented that his father and younger brother were both serving in the trenches. On 12/5/1917 the Advertiser reported that Herbert had enlisted on 3/5/1915, and that his father & younger brother were serving in the Royal Engineers. A memorial service for Herbert had been held at Stanground Church the previous Sunday).
