Notes
The Roll of Honour lists his address as "Late of Wheel Inn, Midgate". It correctly lists that he died in the Northamptonshire Regiment, but wrongly lists his date & place of death, regimental number and Battalion.
(CWGC records that Private Fred Ayres was in the 6th Battalion Northamptonshire Regiment, regimental number 25155, when he died on 17/2/1917; he is buried in grave VI.A.28 at Regina Trench Cemetery at Grandcourt in France, having been reinterred after the War. When Fred's death, aged 36, was announced on 31/3/1917 in the Peterborough Advertiser, he was reported to have been the former landlord of The Wheel Inn at Midgate in Peterborough, and the only son of Mr Fred Ayres of Deeping Gate. The Army Registers of Soldiers' Effects record that his widow Fanny was his legatee. The General Register Office records that in 1908 Fred Ayres married Fanny Elizabeth Brown, with whom he was living at the Wheel Inn on the 1911 census).
