Notes
This Roll of Honour misrecorded his surname as ARMOUR (rather than correctly as AMOUR), and his service number as 339363 (it was actually 33963). It lists his address as 47 Hankey Street, and that he died as the 'result of sickness caused through active service'.
(His death certificate records that Army pensioner Herbert Edward Amour, son of John & Agnes Amour of 47 Hankey Street, Peterborough, died on 5/4/1919 of pulmonary tuberculosis. He had formerly been a Driver in 16th Brigade of the Royal Field Artillery, but had been granted an honourable discharge on 25/7/1917; he was awarded the Silver War Badge serial number 219476.
Herbert's Army Pension file records that he enlisted in the Royal Scots Regiment on 6/10/1903, and that in March 1904 he transferred to the Royal Field Artillery, with which he served in India from 1907 to March 1915. It was while serving in India that he contracted the tuberculosis from which he later died. In March 1915 he was posted to the Mediterranean Theatre, where he served until June 1917; he was then sent back to the UK. After examination, the Army discharged him on 25/7/1917 as unfit for duty due to his tuberculosis, which they recorded as having been the "result of active service. Exposure". Within two years, he died from that illness.
In April 2015 his details were submitted to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, requesting that Herbert Amour be added to their First World War casualty registers. The National Army Museum adjudicated that, although Herbert's death had resulted from his Army service, the illness had been contracted prior to World War 1, and as there is no specific evidence that his condition was aggravated by his service during that conflict, he does not qualify for commemoration by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission; CWGC ref: WGA 467 and National Army Museum reference ARMY 2470 relate. Herbert is buried in Broadway Cemetery in Peterborough, in Section 6; 3rd Division; grave 69A). JK
