Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler add the extra detail. He had worked as a guard on the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway before enlisting in August 1914. Besides his Military Medal, he was recommended for the DCM three times before being wounded in the leg on 10th August. The leg was amputated on the 14th but he died of his wounds (not, as the grave states, KIA).
