Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was not married and worked as a knife cutter but was also on the Committee of the Clothiers Operatives Union: in his spare time, he played cricket and bowls and was a member of the Liberal Club. He enlisted in November 1915, was in France by the summer of 1916 where he was injured when shellfire caused his trench to collapse. Having recovered in England, he returned to his unit in February 1917 and was killed the following year. He was not found by them to be commemorated on any other Calderdale Memorial.
