Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He had worked as a butcher, in Rastrick, Scarborough and Liverpool before working as one first for the Pacific Steam Navigation company and then for the Orient Line on their Australia run. He enlisted in Sydney in August 1914 and, whilst serving in the Dardanelles, first survived a bayonet wound suffered and then, on 6/8/15, received a gunshot wound from which he died aboard the hospital ship Dunluce Castle. He was buried at sea but is also commemorated on IWM 2738 as well as the Lone Pine Memorial, Gallipoli.
