Hornshaw and Fowler were uncertain of his exact identity: the local press reported he was serving with the 8th Battalion of the Duke of Wellington's (West Riding) Regiment and, if he was, the CWGC lists his death details as shown here and says he is also commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial. However, Hornshaw and Fowler say that the only member of the 8th by this name was a resident of North Charlton in Northumberland so it may not be him although they acknowledge that the regiment is almost certainly correct.
