Notes
There is confusion. Hornshaw and Fowler recorded that, according to the local press, he was a weaver at a mill but also had attended Technical College in the evenings to improve his qualifications. They say he enlisted in 1917 and died at a casualty clearing station in Salonika and that the press said he was buried at Janes British Military Cemetery, presumably in Greece. However, there appears to be no such cemetery. The CWGC does not record an Ellis Crabtree and their only Ernest Crabtree who served with the Worcestershire Regiment was, like this man, killed on April 29th, 1918 - but in France. All agree he was only 19. This is the only memorial to name him Ellis: he is also commemorated on IWM 2224 and 596 and there as Ernest.
