Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was a teacher at Holy Trinity School in Halifax who wrote for the local paper under the pseudonym 'Hebden'. He played bowls and cricket but was an especially accomplished rugby player: he captained Hebden Bridge Rugby Club, played for Halifax Reserves: and even had a trial for Yorkshire. He was awaiting a commission when he was killed by a sniper as he brought up rations. He is widely commemorated in the area appearing on IWM 2722, 2689 and 2842.
