All extra details sourced from Sefton War Memorials (see References). Herbert joined up with his brother Frank, serving in the 2nd City Pals Battalion. He went over the top on 1st July 1916 - the opening day of the Battle of the Somme, and was killed, alongside 19,240 other soldiers . His brother, Frank, died from his injuries on 25th July, just over three weeks later.
