According to Bolton Remembers (see References) he was the son of Charles and Sarah Mather, of Wentworth House, 12A, Wentworth Street, Bolton, Lancashire. He was an old boy of Bolton Municipal Secondary School and was formerly a chemist at the Hacken Sewage Works for Bolton Corporation. He appears on a number of Bolton memorials.
