Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the biographic detail. He was born in Sunderland, his father a Captain, and he was a cousin of Lord Roberts of Kandahar. Educated at Charterhouse, he played hockey for Durham and was Master of Beagles. His Grandfather owned a carpet business that was taken over by Crossley's, a mill operator in Halifax, hence the association and him living in Sowerby. He was married, with 2 children and, as a Territorial, served and rose through the ranks. He was also wounded in the German naval bombardment of Hartlepool on 16th December 1914. There is a photo of him on page 194 in the online version of Hornshaw and Fowler's work.
