Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He had attended the school in the past and enlisted in September 1914. Gassed at Ypres in 1915, wounded on the first day of the Somme in 1916 (after which he was treated in Manchester for 6 weeks), his luck ran out the following year when he died of wounds received the previous day. Hornshaw and Fowler discovered he had been living in Nelson in Lancashire when he enlisted, hence the regiment and, given this and that they also found that Willie also hailed from Nelson, they assumed that his brother (also in this regiment) is also commemorated on this memorial.
