Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was married, with a child, worked in a mill and played football for Eastwood AFC before he enlisted in July 1916. He was recommended for a Military Medal for leading a party to capture a German machine gun and 50 Germans who were pinning down his company in shell holes. He was then transferred to Italy in late 1917, the only surviving member of his platoon, until he died at an Aid Post. He is also commemorated on IWM 2224.
