Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He enlisted before the outbreak of war and fought at the mons, the Aisne and the Marne before he was wounded in October 1914. He returned to his unit the following month but then suffered a 'nervous breakdown': he again returned to his unit after only 7 weeks. He then served in Gallipoli and finally Mesopotamia where he died. He was not found by them to be commemorated on any other Calderdale Memorial but is on the Basra Memorial. He was wrongly called Walter by the press at the time.
