Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was originally from Bradford but had been fostered by Alice Pilling of Holywell Green. He enlisted in January 1916 and was killed with his friend George Thorpe. He is widely commemorated in Calderdale, being commemorated on IWM 2606, 2704, 2765 and 2605 as well as here.
