Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. His father taught Maths at the Heath School in Halifax: John was educated at the Perse School in Cambridge and, rather than take up an Exhibition to study Classics at St Catherine's in Cambridge, he enrolled in the Public School Battalion of the Royal Fusiliers. He was commissioned later and is also commemorated on IWM 2689, 2761 and 2676 and on the Loos Memorial.
