Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He was an ex-Regular who had been decorated by the King of Italy at the time of the Messina earthquake in 1912. He was working in Oldham when called up in August 1914 and serving in the Drake Battalion of the Royal Naval Division when fatally wounded by shrapnel whilst on the steps of a sick bay. He is also commemorated on IWM 2738
