Notes
The school website (see References) provides this biography: 'Reginald Gardiner Partridge was born in Llanfoist, Monmouthshire on 16 January 1880, the sixth child of William Bailey Partridge, colliery proprietor, and Mary Frances Elizabeth Hamp. He was at Charterhouse [Robinites & Hodgsonites] between January 1894 and August 1896. He joined the 5th Battalion of the Shropshire Imperial Yeomanry as a Lance Corporal and was killed in action near Oliphant’s Nek Putfontein, Bethulie, South Africa on 29 September 1900.
His commanding officer wrote:
“Partridge was first hit in the thigh; if he had not been such a good plucked one and only lay down at once as the others were ordered to do he might have escaped, but he was so keen to get a good shot at them, that he exposed himself too much. He received two more bullets, one through the shoulder, and one through the neck; everything that was possible was done for him”.'
