Notes
The school website (see References) provides this biography: 'Edward Chetwood Hamilton Grant was born on 8 May 1868, the only son of Edward Charles Grant and Hester Maria Hamilton. He was at Charterhouse (Saunderites) between 1882 and 1884. Whilst at the School he was part of the shooting VIII team 1882-1883, shooting as a substitute in the winning VIII team at Wimbledon in 1883. After leaving school, he joined the Army, serving as Adjutant to the 91st Highlanders Regiment and later being appointed Instructor at the School of Musketry at Hythe. It was during this time that he gained a place in the Army long range Shooting VIII at Bisley, which led to his appointment as District Inspector of Musketry at Aldershot. Having distinguished himself here, he was appointed to take charge of one section of the newly constructed ranges on Salisbury Plain and to go to Switzerland to report back to the Government on the system of safety ranges used there. He gave up his staff appointment at Aldershot in order to go to the front in South Africa, serving as Adjutant of the newly formed 24th Battalion of the Imperial Yeomanry. He died of typhoid fever on active service at Kimberley on 25 August 1901; he left behind a wife, Nora Hamilton Gordon, and his son, Edward Hamilton Grant.'
