Notes
The school website (see References) provides this biography: 'Lewis Henry Gibson was born on 21 May 1881 in Colombo, Western Sri Lanka, the second son of Thomas Maitland Gibson and Elizabeth Lucy Allison. He was at Charterhouse [Hodgsonites] between 1894 and 1898, playing for the 1st XI Football team in 1898. He received his commission in the 1st Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry in 1899. He died of wounds received in action at Spitzkop, Free State, South Africa on 14 August 1900, aged nineteen.
His commanding officer wrote: "Gibson was gallantly doing his duty with his company and both I myself and all my officers most deeply deplore the loss of one who was in every way a credit and an acquisition to the regiment. I was with him at the time and it is a consolation to know that being in a state of collapse from the moment he was hit (on the shoulder by a shell) he suffered no pain. Instead of being buried on the field I had him brought in to the Heilbron Cemetery. The funeral was largely attended by all the regiments of the Highland Brigade, and we his brother officers of the Highland Light Infantry are now having a stone cross with suitable inscription erected."
The Captain of his Company wrote: ''Although Gibson had only been with us a short time we all liked him so much, none more than myself who perhaps had better opportunities than most of us for seeing how keen he was about his work, and how popular he was with all ranks."'
