Notes
The school website (see References) provides this biography: 'Francis Lyall Fryer was born on 8 August 1872, the second son of Sir Frederick William Richards Fryer. He was at Charterhouse [Bodeites] OQ1886-CQ1889. He was commissioned into the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in 1892, but transferred to the Grenadier Guards in 1893. He was killed in action at the battle of Belmont 22 November 1899.

His obituary, published in The Carthusian for December 1899, included this tribute from a fellow officer: 'By the death of Lieutenant and Adjutant Fryer at the battle of Belmont, the Grenadiers and the Brigade of Guards lose an officer whom they could ill spare, for he was devoted to his profession. Gentle, brave, true-hearted, a keen soldier, a fearless rider, the best of friends, he will carry with him in death, as in life, the love of all who knew him.''
