The school website (see References) provides this biography: 'George Vernon Clarke was born on 2 September 1872, the fifth child of Marshal Neville Clarke and Mary Elizabeth Pearson of Graiguenoe Park, Tipperary, Ireland. He was at Charterhouse [Verites] 1886-1890, gaining a Junior Scholarship in 1886 and a Senor Scholarship in 1888. He joined the Army in 1893, being promoted to Captain in the Royal Field Artillery 18th Battery in 1900. He was killed in action at Uitvlacht on 8 April 1902, while rescuing a wounded man.'
