Notes
The Bristol Grammar School website provides his service and death details and this biographical information: 'Son of the late Robert Charles Smart, retired Brewer proprietor, and Emma S. N. Smart, of 12 Gloucester Road, Bishopston. Younger brother of Maud E P, A Louise, Adeline, and John U.
Smart was born on 24/02/1895, and attended the School from 1910-1912. He served as a Private in the Army, with the Gloucestershire Regiment 1st/6th Bn.. Smart sadly lost his life on 19/03/1916, as a result of the War.
Smart is buried in Sucrerie Military Cemetery, Colincamps, France, reference I. C. 14.
The school Chronicle (April 1916) wrote "Of the same age and of the same platoon and almost at the same time [as R.L.V. Helps] fell G.N. Smart, who was in the School for two years from 1910 to 1912 and left from the Upper Fourth to enter Parr's Bank. As a result of the German gas attack, in which Helps was fatally wounded, the stretcher-bearers on the next day had great difficulty in recovering the injured, and while gallantly endeavouring to bring in a wounded man from an isolated post Smart was shot through the heart. He was not at School for a long period, but he was there long enough to give an impression of steadiness and unselfishness, which his life after he left School confirmed, and to which his death has given the final and unquestionable seal."'
