Notes
The Bristol Grammar School website provides his service and death details and this biographical information: 'Son of Herbert Powell Hitchcock, war office clerk, Malta, and Agnes Maud Hitchcock. Herbert Powell was living at The Deans, Farnham, Surrey, while Mrs Hitchcock was living at 117 Ashley Down Road. By 1914 Herbert and Agnes has moved to Marlborough House, Sandown, Isle of Wight. Older brother of Reginald Francis, who also served and was killed (and is listed on this memorial).
Hitchcock was born on 12/11/1894, and attended the School from 1905-1913. He served as a Lieutenant in the Army, with the Machine Gun Corps, Heavy Branch, "A" Coy.. Hitchcock sadly lost his life on 13/11/1916, as a result of the War.
Hitchcock is buried in Mill Road Cemetery, Thiepval, France, grave reference II. B. 10.
The school Chronicle (December 1916) wrote that he was "aged 21, 1905-1913. He was the first Grammar School Boy to win a Classical Scholarship at Balliol College, Oxford, and one of the ablest boys who have been at the School. He took his First in Mods in 1915, and immediately afterwards took a commission in the Norfolk Regiment, from which after some months he was transferred to the Motor Machine Gun Corps. The Oxford Magazine says no more than the truth when it states that 'his death cuts short what would almost certainly have been a very distinguished career.' He had great powers of concentration and clear thinking, and a powerful English style: at the Bar he would probably have won great success. He had not been long at the front with the new Corps when an accident to his machine led to his exposing himself, and he was instantaneously killed."
