Distressing News for Ventnor Parents.
It is our sad duty to record bad news received this week by the parents of two well-known young Ventnorians.
Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Vine, Clarence Road, have been officially notified that their only son, Pte. Raymond Alfred Barton Vine, attached to the 1st Hampshire Regt., has died in India from the effects of a snake-bite. No further particulars are yet to hand. Their son was 25 years of age, and had been in the Army for 2½ years. He was wounded in Greece, and afterwards saw service in the Middle East, which he left for India in February last. Before enlisting, Pte. Vine held a clerical appointment for several years at the Manor House Hotel, Sandown, and before that he was for some time employed at Smith's Bookstall at Ventnor Station. He was a fine type of lad, although somewhat reserved, and was held in high esteem by all his associates.
