He re-enlisted in January 1915 but poor health saw him first invalided home with rheumatism and then redeployed at the School of Artillery in Shoeburyness. He was on leave, visiting his terminally ill wife when he too was taken ill. he reported to St Luke's Hospital in Halifax, but the MO told him to return to Shoeburyness: however, he collapsed at home and was taken by ambulance back to St Luke's where he was rejected again. He then went to the sick bay in Wellesley Barracks in Halifax where he was admitted to a bed in the billiard room where he deteriorated for 2 months. his wife out lived him by 5 days.
