Notes
Hornshaw and Fowler provide the extra details. He worked in the cardroom at a mill and was married with two children. He enlisted in March 1915 and was wounded twice during his year in France before being killed by shellfire, his brother Arthur witnessing this and then writing to his widow. (Note: There is an Arthur Carter also commemorated on this memorial who died a month after Walter but he was only 23 whereas Walter was almost 20 years older and Hornshaw and Fowler did not record that the press linked these two men as the brothers).
