Notes
The Roll mistakenly listed this man twice: once as 'C.W.B. Rippon', under his parents' address (8 South Street, Stanground), and again (on its following page) as 'William Rippon', under the address of his widow Elizabeth (i.e. Chapel Yard, Stanground). Both entries record him as having died on 12/8/1916 as a Lance Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, Northants Regiment, and that he was buried at Vermelles. The Roll's entry for 'C.W.B. Rippon' did not include his regimental number; this other entry for him (as William Rippon) misrecorded his regimental number as 17934. The man's name was actually Charles William Bullimore Rippon, and his true regimental number was 17394. (CWGC record him as Lance Corporal Charles William Rippon, the 'Eldest son of John and Eliza Rippon, of 8, South St., Stanground, Peterborough'). He had married Elizabeth Ward in 1907. Confusion re his widow's/parents' address, combined with the wrong/missing regimental number, evidently resulted in him being mistakenly listed on the Roll twice. Whilst both entries quite obviously relate to the same man, as the data within each of them is not identical, we need a Names record for each of them.
(N.B. The Roll is known to include numerous errors, including: misspelt names and inaccurate date/place of death, service number/ rank/ military unit etc; several casualties were mistakenly listed on it twice [i.e. under their true name and also the alias under which they served]; several other men were listed on it due to the mistaken belief they had died, whereas they had actually survived).
