Notes
The Roll lists his address as 3 Milton Terrace. [In its draft stage, the Roll had entries for him as both 'Horace Steven Mays' and as 'Horace Steven Mays Marston'. Having realised that both entries related to the same man, the compiler deleted one of those entries, but unfortunately they deleted the wrong one; the Roll therefore wrongly lists him as Marston, instead of as Mays. Horace's own surname was Mays, as which he served and died; Marston was the surname of his mother's second husband, who she married in 1915].

(N.B. The Roll is known to include numerous errors, including: misspelt names and inaccurate date/place of death, service number/ rank/ military unit etc; several casualties were mistakenly listed on it twice [i.e. under their true name and also the alias under which they served]; several other men were listed on it due to the mistaken belief they had died, whereas they had actually survived).
