Notes
This man was mistakenly listed on the Roll twice: once under his true name Joseph Beecroft Exton, and again as 'Joseph Beecroft Brown'. [The confusion is thought to have arisen due to his sister Ethel Mary's married surname being Brown]. This entry for Joseph as Exton lists his address as 'late of 3 Hankey Street', and that he died 8/11/1918; it incorrectly states he died serving in the 1st Northants, whereas he actually served and died in the 6th Royal West Kents. [The entry under the wrong surname, Brown, correctly recorded his Regiment]. As he was mistakenly listed on the Roll twice, we accordingly have a Names record for him under both surnames.

(N.B. The Roll is known to include numerous errors, including: misspelt names and inaccurate date/place of death, service number/ rank/ military unit etc; several casualties were mistakenly listed on it twice [i.e. under their true name and also the alias under which they served etc]; several other men were listed on it due to the mistaken belief they had died, whereas they had actually survived).
