Notes
The Roll mistakenly lists this man twice, once as 'Victor Coles' of Bamber Street, with no further details (to which our Names record 1066358 relates), and again, under this entry as 'Albert Victor Head', for whom it lists no address, but records as being a Lance Corporal in the Middlesex Regiment who was killed in action on 22/10/1917.
Albert Victor's surname was actually Coles, as which he served under regimental number 52565. (Following the death of his father, his mother had married Albert Head in 1898; Albert Victor Coles was subsequently inaccurately recorded on census as 'Albert Victor Head', the 'son' of Albert Head. In 1911 the family was living at 32 Bamber Street).
The confusion re Albert Victor's own surname of Coles and his mother's later surname Head evidently led to him being mistakenly listed on the Roll twice, under both the surnames Head and Coles. Whilst both entries relate to the same man, the fact that the Roll listed him twice means that we likewise need a Names record for each of those two entries.
(N.B. The Roll is known to include numerous errors, including: misspelt names and inaccurate date/place of death, service number/ rank/ military unit etc; several casualties were mistakenly listed on it twice [i.e. under their true name and also the alias under which they served]; several other men were listed on it due to the mistaken belief they had died, whereas they had actually survived).
